She’s one of my favorite dancers to have have watched on stage and to have worked with in the studio. I don’t normally show my work in such large chunks but I felt compelled to after working on these photos today.
After the jump no more words, just Arolyn.

What a gorgeous series Christopher — hard to pick my favorites, probably #’s 7, 11, 12, 13, & 15 — though these are “caught” moments they all have an arc or thrust that extends the movement in time, at least I sense it clearly. Arolyn certainly shows some beautiful lines. You’re right though about that hard shadow line from the PLM, or are you upping the contrast?
Arolyn was shot with either a 60″ umbrella or my 86″ PLM with diffusion, not with the bare silver fabric of the silver PLM. I do add a bit of contrast but not too much, similar to Ilford HP5 or Agfa APX 100.
Absolutely beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
Amazing light from a PLM. I’d have thought maybe you were rockin a gridded box. May have to investigate the silver PLM.
Rapport between dancers and photographer is pretty good too. I’d love to listen to your instructions.
Thank you again for sharing these! Arolyn is my cousin and i completely agree with you, because she is my favorite dancer, too! =) these photographs (as well as your other work) are amazingly beautiful. I love coming onto FB and looking at your albums, but i was especially excited when i saw this in a post….it’s been a really long time since i have seen her dance and i used to love watching her! so thank you, again, for sharing these….it means a lot to the people who love her to see her talent and strength caught on film, and also how happy she looks. You can tell she really loves what she does! <3
P.S. My favorite out of these (though, it is hard to choose!) is the last one. It’s stunning.
Wow! You captured the strength of this dancer so well!
